Visit Custer State Park,
one of the largest state parks in America.
Custer State Park is a drive-through
wildlife treasure featuring buffalo, pronghorn antelope, wild donkeys, big horn sheep,
coyotes, wild turkey and prairie dogs.
Custer State Park is also known for its
seasonally-changing native vegetation.

Whitetail and mule deer thrive everywhere in the
Black Hills. You might
even see a mountain lion,
an increasingly encountered resident
of the central Black Hills.

FISHING and HUNTING

Black Hills streams abound with Brook, Rainbow and
German Brown Trout. Non-resident South Dakota
fishing licenses are available for one day, three days

The Black Hills also offer fishing in an abundance of
man-made lakes. Pactola and Sheridan Lakes
are both within minutes of the Black Forest Inn.

The Black Hills offer hunting opportunities for
small and large game, waterfowl and wild turkey.
Non-resident South Dakota hunting and fishing licenses
are available at SD sporting good stores, convenience
stores and online at www.state.sd.us/gfp

DAY TOURING

Drive the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway
on Iron Mountain Road (Hwy 16A) over
switchbacks and pigtail bridges and
through tunnels with a view of Mount Rushmore.
Take the Needles Highway (Hwy 87)
through the Cascade Spires,
the Needle's Eye and Sylvan Lake
in high granite country.

Drive the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway
(Hwy 14A) between Cheyenne Crossing and Spearfish. Enjoy beautiful Roughlock Falls,
Bridal Veil Falls, Spearfish Falls and a deep
canyon with limestone towering overhead.

HIKING, BIKING and CLIMBING

The Black Hills offer tremendous opportunities
for hiking and biking through the National Forest
or over high granite ridges and ranges.

Several formal trails traverse the Black Hills,
including the George S. Mickelson Trail
and the Centennial Trail.
Trails range from 2 to 110 miles in length,
following old railroad lines, mining roads and
waterways through gulches and tunnels.

The Needles area and the monolithic granite
uplifts behind Mount Rushmore provide
excellent vertical granite climbing, while
Spearfish Canyon provides awesome
vertical limestone climbing. Professional
climbing schools and outfitters are available.
